How Russian Influence Could Have Altered the U.S. Election Results

In the final days of the 2024 U.S. presidential election campaign, Russian efforts to influence the outcome escalated, with bomb threats targeting Democratic-leaning areas in key swing states. The FBI traced the origin of these threats to Russian email domains, highlighting the ongoing issue of foreign interference in American elections.

This surge in disinformation and propaganda from Russia, along with similar efforts from Iran and China, raised concerns about their impact on the election results. Unlike the 2016 election, where Russian hacking and disinformation played a more direct role in shaping the narrative, the 2024 race saw a more subtle influence that could have affected the enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy.

Various factors, including media coverage favoring President-elect Donald Trump, Harris’s campaign strategy, and the tendency of Americans to hold their presidents accountable for all issues, contributed to the election outcome. Additionally, Trump’s significant gains among Latino and Black men raised questions about the role of gender in shaping voter preferences.

Despite the heightened disinformation efforts and bomb threats, voter turnout in the 2024 election is expected to be lower than the record-breaking 66% seen in 2020. This decline in enthusiasm may be attributed to a combination of factors, including the impact of disinformation campaigns and other issues that influenced the election dynamics.

One notable aspect of the election was the bomb threats in Democratic-leaning counties in Georgia, particularly Dekalb and Fulton. While these threats disrupted the voting process, the overall impact on the election results was minimal, with Harris winning by margins similar to Biden’s in 2020. The decline in registered voters in these counties raised concerns about voter suppression efforts and the need to protect voting rights.

In swing states like Michigan, disinformation campaigns focused on the Israel-Hamas conflict played a significant role in shaping voter perceptions. Efforts to paint Harris as a pro-Israel candidate may have influenced voter decisions, particularly among those who believed that U.S. support for Israel was too strong. This misinformation campaign likely contributed to Trump’s support in targeted swing states, potentially affecting the election outcome in close races.

While disinformation alone may not have determined the election results, its role in amplifying certain narratives and influencing voter perceptions cannot be overlooked. As part of the broader machinery of disinformation that includes social media, campaign distortions, and foreign influence, these efforts highlight the need for continued vigilance and critical assessment of information sources in the democratic process.
