In the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many industries to adapt to a new online environment, including the pornography industry. With social distancing measures in place, the adult entertainment industry faced challenges in maintaining its business model. The need for social distancing posed a significant obstacle for the production of pornographic content as physical contact between actors was restricted.

However, innovation within the industry quickly emerged as a solution. OnlyFans, a U.K.-based subscription service for adult content creators, saw a surge in popularity during the pandemic. With traditional studios closed, many pornographic actors turned to direct-to-consumer services on OnlyFans to continue producing content for their audience. Furthermore, the closure of bars and clubs led to an increase in demand for online adult content, resulting in a dramatic increase in users and creators on the platform.

Between March and April, both the user and creator bases on OnlyFans grew by 75 percent, reaching 85 million users and 1 million creators by the end of the year. However, the platform faced a setback in 2021 when banking partners pulled their services due to concerns about illegal content. This led OnlyFans to announce a ban on pornography, which sparked backlash from content creators. The platform quickly reversed its decision, continuing its rapid growth despite reports of child exploitation and sex trafficking on the site.

The story of OnlyFans exemplifies the dynamics of the market in action. Leveraging technological innovation in the digital age, the platform was able to adapt quickly to disruptions and meet the changing demands of consumers. However, it also raises questions about the moral implications of exploiting human desires for profit.

While free-market theory posits that consumers act in their own self-interest to maximize utility, it overlooks the complexities of human nature and the potential harm that can result from unchecked technological advancements. The pursuit of instant gratification and shortcuts to happiness can lead individuals down paths that are detrimental to their well-being in the long run.

The rise of OnlyFans and the broader trends in technological innovation highlight the need for a more thoughtful and intentional approach to technology policy. As society grapples with the implications of digital advancements on human flourishing, policymakers must consider the ethical and societal impacts of unchecked technological development.

Moving forward, there is a call for policymakers to channel technology towards the flourishing of the family and the human person, addressing the harmful effects of addictive online content, promoting restorative medicine, and protecting against harmful practices like doctor-assisted suicide. By engaging in thoughtful regulation and incentivizing innovation that aligns with ethical principles, society can navigate the complexities of technological advancement while prioritizing human well-being and the preservation of the family unit.
