J Brand’s Struggle to Prioritize Mental Health in an Unfamiliar Industry

J Brand, a company in the electrical and data industry, has placed mental health at the forefront of their priorities. In the past, mental health was not considered a business priority, but the company realizes how essential it is to prioritize the psychological wellbeing of staff.

With over 100 engineers spread across the country and 40 office-based staff, J Brand understands the challenges in providing sufficient support for staff members. The isolation caused by lockdowns has added urgency to the company’s efforts to reinforce their systems in place to give help if needed.

To improve and maintain the mental health of their employees, J Brand has implemented a variety of schemes. The company provides private cover for all employees, with a trained professional phone call away at any time of the day or night. Referrals are also provided for more comprehensive treatment. J Brand also invested in training mental health first aiders for members of their office team.

For a predominantly male workforce, getting mental health messages across has been essential. Engineers may be away from their families for weeks at a time, causing loneliness, but a quick phone call to ask how they are can go a long way. J Brand believes in building an employee’s sense of worth and value to the company. By fostering team spirit and togetherness, a healthy and happy individual will naturally become a more effective ambassador for the brand.

Although every company is different and has its financial priorities, J Brand believes that investing in their workforce’s mental health benefits their staff, clients, and profits. With a satisfied and productive workforce, the company ultimately becomes more profitable. Therefore, J Brand recommends for businesses to devise a mental health strategy today to prioritize the wellbeing of their staff.
