A former CIA officer, Joshua Schulte, has been handed a 40-year jail term for leaking a cache of classified hacking tools to the whistle-blowing platform Wikileaks and possessing child abuse images. The US justice department declared Schulte’s document dump to Wikileaks in 2017 as the biggest data breach in CIA history, comprising 8,761 documents from the agency’s “Vault 7” tools. Despite his denial of the allegations, Schulte was found guilty on various charges across three federal trials in New York from 2020 to 2023.

During sentencing, US Attorney Damian Williams characterized Schulte’s actions as a betrayal of his country through egregious acts of espionage. Prosecutors presented evidence revealing Schulte’s employment as a software developer in the Center for Cyber Intelligence, where he transmitted stolen information to Wikileaks in 2016 and subsequently lied to FBI agents about his involvement in the leak. The motivation behind his actions, prosecutors argued, stemmed from workplace discontent and a desire for retribution against perceived injustices.

The repercussions of Schulte’s leak were far-reaching, severely compromising the CIA’s capacity to gather intelligence against US adversaries, endangering personnel, programs, and assets, and incurring substantial financial losses for the agency. Following Wikileaks’ publication of the data, the FBI interrogated Schulte multiple times, during which he disavowed any responsibility. Subsequent searches of his residence unearthed a trove of child sexual abuse materials, further tarnishing his already tarnished reputation.

Despite being incarcerated since 2018, Schulte’s transgressions did not cease, as he allegedly attempted to transmit additional information from jail by smuggling a phone to contact a journalist with details about CIA cyber operations and drafting tweets under the alias “Jason Bourne” disclosing sensitive CIA cyber tools. Assistant US Attorney Michael Lockard underscored the extent of damage caused by Schulte’s actions, emphasizing the severe impact on national security and the intelligence community, posing a significant threat to US interests and operations.

The sentencing of Schulte marks a definitive conclusion to a protracted legal battle, punctuated by revelations of espionage, deceit, and misconduct within the CIA ranks. The repercussions of his actions continue to reverberate within the intelligence community, serving as a cautionary tale about the grave consequences of breaching national security protocols and betraying the trust vested in individuals tasked with safeguarding classified information.
