In a significant development, Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), announced his resignation on Sunday. Carvalho, who had been at the helm of the nation’s second-largest school district since early 2022, has set his resignation to take effect on June 21, 2026, and he emphasized that this step aims to minimize distractions that could impede student learning.

The escalating situation traces back to February, when federal agents conducted a raid at multiple locations, including Carvalho’s home and office, as well as the residence of a close professional associate. This high-profile investigation primarily targets a 2023 contract valued at $6 million, which the LAUSD awarded to AllHere, a startup chosen to develop a student-facing chatbot aimed at enhancing communication and support.

As part of the contract, the district initially paid $3 million upfront. Unfortunately, the ambitious project encountered numerous issues, leading to its collapse in 2024. This setback was exacerbated when Joanna Smith-Griffith, the founder of AllHere, faced allegations of embezzling funds. Additionally, the controversial initiative raised severe concerns regarding data privacy and triggered whistleblower complaints, highlighting the risks associated with managing sensitive student information.

The FBI’s investigation intensified following these developments. In February, federal agents executed search warrants across various locations, resulting in the evacuation of staff at LAUSD headquarters during the operation. Notably, they also searched the Miami home of Debra Kerr, an education technology salesperson who has had a long-standing personal and professional relationship with Carvalho dating back to the early 2000s. Records indicate that Kerr played a significant role in facilitating the AllHere contract; however, authorities have refrained from discussing the investigation’s specific targets or scope.

During his four-year tenure, Carvalho was reappointed unanimously by the school board in the fall of 2025, just months before the FBI executed their raid. In his statement regarding his resignation, he highlighted several achievements, including record graduation rates and improvements in academic performance during his leadership. Carvalho’s record has been marked by a strong commitment to educational advancements, but the recent turbulence associated with the investigative scrutiny has overshadowed these accomplishments.

Following the resignation announcement, the LAUSD Board of Education made public their intention to uphold stability and foster public trust within the district. They expressed their commitment to a smooth transition as acting superintendent Andrés E. Chait continues to lead the district during this tumultuous period.

Amid these unfolding events, a critical reflection on procurement processes for technology contracts comes to the forefront.
