Allegations of Massive Surveillance Operations by LinkedIn Revealed in New Investigation

A recent investigation conducted by Fairlinked e.V. has raised serious concerns regarding Microsoft-owned LinkedIn, suggesting that the platform is engaged in a substantial, undisclosed corporate surveillance operation. Dubbed the “BrowserGate” report, this investigation uncovers hidden code on LinkedIn’s website that reportedly scans the devices of its one billion users. The issue lies in how this scanning operation occurs without user consent, disclosure, or any mention within LinkedIn’s stated privacy policy.

The Hidden Surveillance Operation

LinkedIn has always required its users to disclose real names, job titles, and employers, making any scanning operation far from anonymous. The platform allegedly links the installed software on each user’s device to their personal and professional identities, consequently creating a comprehensive profile that could violate individual privacy rights.

The BrowserGate investigation indicates that LinkedIn’s covert data collection measures may infringe on significant legal frameworks, particularly within the European Union (EU). Such actions raise alarm since personal data collected through this secretive operation includes sensitive information linked to users’ political affiliations, religious beliefs, and even indications of neurodivergence. Moreover, the investigation reveals that the code tracks over 500 job-seeking tools. This constant monitoring puts professionals at risk of exposing their job search activities to current employers, potentially leading to unwarranted repercussions.

Under EU privacy legislation, the acquisition of such personal data without explicit consent contravenes established laws. The implications of this surveillance suggest a troubling trend towards eroding the trust users place in platforms such as LinkedIn, which should ideally prioritize user privacy.

Corporate Espionage and Competitor Tracking

Fairlinked e.V. expands its allegations beyond individual privacy violations, accusing LinkedIn of engaging in large-scale corporate espionage. The report claims that LinkedIn’s hidden code goes so far as to scan for more than 200 competing sales tools, such as Apollo, Lusha, and ZoomInfo. This surveillance allegedly allows LinkedIn to compile a vast database containing the identities of users associated with rival software.

The findings assert that LinkedIn has utilized this secretly gathered information to issue warnings to users of these third-party tools, effectively intimidating professionals engaged in competitive sectors. Furthermore, the platform is accused of misleading European regulators regarding its compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In 2023, LinkedIn was classified as a regulated gatekeeper, imposing legal obligations to allow third-party applications to co-exist harmoniously within its ecosystem. However, LinkedIn is alleged to have offered only limited APIs that largely fail to address the demands of the market, all while expanding its surveillance operations.

Key findings raised in the BrowserGate report include:

  • LinkedIn has concealed an extensive internal API, referred to as “Voyager,” from its compliance reports to EU authorities, which processes around 163,000 calls every second.
  • The number of third-party tools being monitored by LinkedIn has escalated from approximately 460 in 2024 to over 6,000 by February 2026, creating an alarming trajectory.
  • Instead of cooperating with EU directives aimed at promoting an open platform, LinkedIn has seemingly devised techniques to identify and penalize users of the very tools that regulators aimed to protect.

Additionally, the investigation reveals that LinkedIn’s data gathering does not solely remain on its platform. The report found that LinkedIn discreetly integrates invisible tracking elements from HUMAN Security, a cybersecurity firm, which surreptitiously places cookies on users’ devices. This operation is supplemented by additional encrypted scripts from Google, as well as LinkedIn’s proprietary fingerprinting technologies, all executed in the background without the knowledge or consent of users.

The extensive allegations against LinkedIn underscore a growing concern over user privacy and corporate oversight in the digital age. As the investigation by Fairlinked e.V. unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how LinkedIn responds to these serious accusations and whether regulatory bodies will take appropriate action to ensure compliance with existing privacy legislations.

In light of these revelations, users may now need to reconsider their trust in platforms that collect and monitor such sensitive information, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations that protect consumer rights in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
