Liverpool fans have been identified as the primary targets of ticketing scams during the 2023-2024 English Premier League football season, according to the NatWest League of Ticket Scams. Last season, Liverpool supporters faced significant losses, with over £17,000 ($22,000) being handed over to fraudsters selling fake tickets. Arsenal fans were not far behind, coming in second with losses totaling £12,000 ($16,000).
The NatWest report reveals that on average, affected fans are losing £180.66 each per season due to these ticket scams. However, some individuals have reported much higher losses. One desperate fan shared that they lost £900 ($1,200) in an attempt to witness Arsenal clinch their first title in over two decades. Another supporter of Newcastle United fell victim to scammers, losing £846.50 ($1,110.29). The highest reported loss among Liverpool fans stood at £850 ($1,114.88).
As the previous season concluded in April, it was evident that a significant amount of money had been lost to these fraudulent activities. With the beginning of the new season, there are concerns that the cycle of scams will likely continue.
Stuart Skinner, the head of fraud prevention at NatWest, emphasized the importance of vigilance among customers as the new season commences. “As the new season kicks off, we urge customers to be extra vigilant and stay safe from criminals who are exploiting fans’ devotion to their club,” he stated in the report. Skinner also highlighted that the actual value of ticket scams could be much higher as not all incidents are reported.
