Ludhiana Doctor Scammed of ₹22k by Cyber Fraudsters

In a recent incident, a doctor from Salempur village in Jagraon fell victim to cyber fraudsters, losing a significant amount of money. The complainant, identified as Navraj Singh, runs his clinic and received a call on December 16 from an unknown number. The caller claimed to require wall putty for a school’s paint work in Sidhwan Bet and assured Navraj that they would promptly make the payment upon delivery.

Assuming that his neighbor had provided his number to the caller due to a lack of a UPI app, Navraj agreed to help. The caller then sent him a QR code and instructed him to scan it using his UPI app, citing the need to verify his account before processing the payment. Subsequently, the caller persuaded Navraj to transfer a small amount to their account under the pretext of returning his money along with the payment for the wall putty.

Unfortunately, Navraj ended up transferring a total of ₹22,600 to the fraudster’s account, who promptly ceased all communication after receiving the funds. Realizing that he had been deceived, Navraj promptly reported the incident to the authorities. ASI Shervinder Singh, who is leading the investigation, disclosed that the cyber crime police station in Ludhiana rural has registered an FIR against the unidentified culprit under Section 318 (4) for cheating.

The police are currently working on tracing the bank account connected to the UPI account that received Navraj’s money. As cyber fraud continues to pose a threat to individuals and businesses alike, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when dealing with unknown entities or financial transactions over the phone or online.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers of cyber fraud and emphasizes the importance of safeguarding personal and financial information. As technology advances, so do the tactics employed by cyber criminals, making it imperative for individuals to stay informed and take proactive measures to protect themselves from potential threats.

In light of this incident, authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity or requests for financial transactions to prevent falling victim to similar scams.
