Generative AI has been identified as a tool that has enabled malicious actors to lower the barriers for entry and increase their efficiency in carrying out cyber threats, according to a recent report by the Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA).
The report, which is based on data and case studies available to CTA members, outlines the ways in which attackers are currently leveraging GenAI. These include the creation of deepfake videos and deceptive images, cloning voice recordings, generating convincing emails and messages, optimizing command and control operations, spreading misinformation, and creating AI-controlled networks of fake social media accounts.
While AI innovations have undeniably empowered adversaries, the analysts behind the report emphasized that these advancements have only led to incremental improvements in their capabilities, rather than completely new threats. Defending against AI-enhanced threats may be more challenging, but it does not necessitate revolutionary tools or techniques. Foundational cybersecurity practices, such as regular software updates, multi-factor authentication, and endpoint monitoring, remain crucial in countering all threats.
In order to effectively combat AI-enhanced threats, organizations must adopt technical solutions like deepfake detectors, as well as prioritize continuous education and the development of specific skills among employees. Cultivating a culture of critical thinking and encouraging skepticism are also essential in thwarting malicious AI activities.
Chelsea Conard, an analyst with the CTA, highlighted the importance of training that emphasizes content analysis and skepticism. Implementing technical tools to detect content manipulation, along with process-based measures like multi-channel verification and pre-arranged authentication phrases, can provide critical safeguards against AI-enhanced threats.
Despite the advancements in GenAI, the report suggests that adversaries have not fully utilized its capabilities. This presents an opportunity for organizations to swiftly implement defenses that can effectively mitigate most AI-enhanced threats. By staying vigilant, prioritizing education, and investing in the right tools and processes, organizations can stay ahead of malicious actors leveraging generative AI.
