Police in Rourkela made a significant breakthrough in a high-profile cyber fraud case, with the arrest of a 28-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh. The accused, a key player in a scam amounting to Rs 67.7 lakh involving a senior central government officer, was apprehended as part of an ongoing international cyber crime investigation that has seen a total of 14 arrests since the start of the year.

The DIG of police for the western range, Brijesh Kumar Rai, disclosed details of the arrest during a press conference held on Saturday. The case, first reported on December 30, 2023, revolves around a fraudulent trading app posing as INDIRA securities, a legally registered entity under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Further scrutiny into the matter has exposed a sprawling web of cyber criminals operating across South-east Asian countries, notably in Cambodia. This network has been implicated in a range of illicit activities, from manipulating stock markets to perpetrating scams on dating apps, cryptocurrency fraud, and even involvement in human trafficking.

A particularly troubling revelation from the investigation is the phenomenon of “cyber slavery,” where thousands of unsuspecting Indians find themselves ensnared abroad due to restrictive movement regulations and the seizure of their passports by these criminal syndicates, as highlighted by superintendent of police Nitesh Wadhwani.

The arrested individual is believed to have played diverse roles both in Cambodia and India, with authorities seizing a cache of incriminating items such as 10 cellphones, foreign currency, and multiple banking documents. Look-out circulars have also been issued for 15 additional suspects believed to be connected to the nefarious operations.

The scope of the scam has transcended its initial bounds, with over 500 similar complaints from victims across 14 different states in India, including Bihar, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. In response to the gravity of the situation and its international ramifications, the investigation is receiving support from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The apprehended suspect is currently in police custody for further interrogation as authorities collaborate closely with the Bureau of Immigration, Crime Branch Odisha, and law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh to track down the remaining individuals involved in the cyber crime ring.

In a concerted effort to combat such transnational cyber threats, law enforcement agencies are stepping up their vigilance and cracking down on these criminal networks that pose a significant risk to the online security of individuals and the financial stability of the country. The persistence and dedication of the authorities in unraveling these elaborate criminal schemes serve as a warning to would-be perpetrators that their unlawful activities will not go unpunished.
