Memcyco Report: Just 6% of Brands Can Safeguard Customers from Digital Impersonation Fraud

Memcyco Inc., a leading provider of digital trust technology focused on guarding companies and their clients against digital impersonation fraud, has recently published its first-ever 2024 State of Website Impersonation Scams report. The findings unveiled by Memcyco’s research reveal that the majority of companies lack adequate solutions to combat digital impersonation fraud, with most only becoming aware of attacks through feedback from their customers.

According to Memcyco’s report, over half of the survey participants (53%) expressed dissatisfaction with their existing cybersecurity measures, stating that these solutions do not effectively address website impersonation threats. Additionally, 41% of respondents admitted that their current solutions only offer partial protection to both themselves and their customers.

A mere 6% of brands reported having a solution that effectively addresses website impersonation attacks, despite a staggering 87% of companies acknowledging the severity of website impersonation as a significant concern. Furthermore, 69% of organizations confessed to having experienced website impersonation attacks against their own websites.

The proliferation of fake websites utilized for phishing-related activities, a key contributor to account takeover (ATO) incidents, has emerged as a burgeoning predicament. Cybercriminals managed to amass a remarkable $1 billion in 2023 alone from such fraudulent activities, as per data furnished by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, representing a massive surge compared to previous years.

The survey highlighted that while 72% of companies possess monitoring systems to detect counterfeit versions of their websites, a substantial 66% still rely on customer alerts to identify digital impersonation attacks. Alarmingly, 37% of respondents revealed that they only learn about website impersonation incidents following public criticisms by affected customers on social media platforms.

The concerning inadequacy in shielding against digital impersonation fraud has raised queries about companies’ accountability in reimbursing affected customers. Currently, 48% of survey participants are aware of impending regulations that may mandate customer reimbursements, making robust protection against digital impersonation fraud a critical aspect in averting revenue losses.

Israel Mazin, the Chairman and CEO of Memcyco, voiced concerns over the growing threat of website impersonation scams and emphasized the imperative for companies to enhance their capabilities to safeguard customers online. He highlighted the concerning blind spot created by companies’ limited visibility into these types of attacks.

The State of Website Impersonation Scams report, executed in partnership with Global Surveyz Research, relied on insights from 200 full-time employees spanning Director to C-level executives within security, fraud, digital, and web sectors. Only organizations with transactional websites drawing over 10,000 monthly visits were included in the study.

Memcyco’s array of solutions is engineered to combat the escalating wave of website impersonation scams by offering real-time alerts to fortify end-users during each website visit, while also providing organizations with invaluable insights into the extent and repercussions of cyberattacks on their platforms.
