Microsoft Announces Critical Out-of-Band Security Updates for .NET Developer Platform

On October 25, Microsoft took a significant step in enhancing the security of its .NET developer platform by releasing out-of-band (OOB) security updates designed to address critical vulnerabilities within the framework. Among these updates is a fix for a particularly severe buffer overflow vulnerability that poses a substantial risk to users of various .NET versions.

The updates are applicable to .NET versions 8, 9, 10, and the Release Candidate 3 for version 11. Microsoft has strongly advised users to implement these updates promptly to mitigate potential security breaches. This proactive measure highlights the tech giant’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of its development platforms.

The OOB updates encompass patches for two newly identified vulnerabilities and two additional flaws that were inadequately addressed during Microsoft’s October Patch Tuesday rollout. Users are informed that individual updates have been provided for each affected .NET version, and it is crucial for those using .NET 11 RC2 to transition to RC3 to benefit from these important fixes.

Understanding the .NET Framework

.NET is a robust, open-source framework that facilitates the creation of applications and cloud services for developers. Supported across multiple operating systems including Windows, Linux, and macOS, .NET has become an essential tool for developers looking to build scalable and efficient applications. The framework’s design allows for a degree of versatility and innovation, making it a favored choice in the development community.

Addressing Critical Vulnerabilities

One of the newly addressed vulnerabilities is identified as CVE-2026-111497, which impacts .NET versions 8, 9, 10, and 11 across all operating systems. This vulnerability resides within the Brotli decompression algorithm utilized by the .NET framework. If exploited, it can lead to dire consequences such as unauthorized access to, or corruption of, process memory. This could facilitate information disclosure, denial of service attacks, or even elevation of privileges, presenting substantial risks to application integrity.

Microsoft has cautioned that applications employing Brotli-compressed data – particularly through ASP.NET Core request decompression, automatic response decompression via HttpClient, or the System.IO.Compression Brotli APIs – may be particularly vulnerable. The flaw has garnered a critical CVSS score of 9.2, underscoring the urgency with which developers should address it. Furthermore, users of Google Brotli versions 1.0.3 to 1.2.0 are also urged to update their Brotli libraries to the latest versions available to ensure comprehensive security.

In addition to the Brotli vulnerability, Microsoft’s OOB update addresses another critical flaw identified as CVE-2026-114148. This vulnerability permits an authorized attacker to escalate privileges locally by taking advantage of unsafe ownership metadata in certain affected .NET tarballs. While it affects .NET versions 7-11, it is specifically relevant to Linux systems. For versions 10 and 11, the risk is confined to source-build tarballs, while for versions 8 and 9, it also extends to ASP.NET Core distributions obtained through ASP.NET Core tarballs. The precise CVSS score for this vulnerability remains reserved.

Moreover, Microsoft has reissued patches for two vulnerabilities disclosed during October’s Patch Tuesday rollout. These include CVE-2026-70197, a memory corruption flaw affecting versions 8-11, and CVE-2026-102870, a code injection vulnerability impacting .NET versions 10 and 11.

Guidance for Developers

In light of these updates, Microsoft has issued detailed remediation guidance for developers. Suggested actions include:

  1. Installing the updated runtime for the specific .NET version used in framework-dependent applications, followed by an application restart.
  2. Rebuilding and republishing self-contained applications with the updated runtime.
  3. Rebuilding and redeploying containers using updated .NET container images.
  4. Acquiring the updated source-build artifacts for the appropriate .NET version and rebuilding packages to incorporate the tarball ownership fix.
  5. For users of ASP.NET Core tarballs on .NET 8 and 9, it is recommended to refresh the installation using the updated ASP.NET Core Runtime tarball.

With these updates, Microsoft reinforces its commitment to advancing security within the .NET ecosystem while empowering developers to protect their applications against emerging threats.

As the landscape of cybersecurity continues to evolve, vigilance and timely updates are paramount for safeguarding valuable digital assets. The tech community is urged to act swiftly in integrating these crucial updates to ensure their applications remain secure and resilient against potential vulnerabilities.
