Minecraft Malware Spreading Via Mods and Plug-ins

Popular Minecraft modpacks have been found to contain a dangerous worm virus named “fracturizer” that is spreading malware throughout the game. The modpacks, which are made up of multiple game themes pulled together, are used by players to toggle between various mods, providing more experience options. However, in addition to helping players, these modpacks are also spreading the dangerous malware.

According to the fracturizer GitHub repository, the malware is “incredibly dangerous,” and any infected machine should be considered completely compromised by the threat actors behind the virus. The repository characterizes the malware as a worm virus, which means that it is able to spread automatically throughout a network or system without any user interaction.

GitHub researchers discovered the malicious files going back to April, with some files even being dated from 1999. CurseForge, the platform where many Minecraft modpacks are hosted, assured users in a statement added to the fracturizer GitHub page on June 7th that it is not compromised and has suspended accounts linked to the malware. The CurseForge team is currently working on a fix to address the issue.

The command-and-control server linked to fracturizer has also been suspended by its hosting provider, according to GitHub.

Players who want to check if their Minecraft modpacks have been exposed to fracturizer can refer to a specific set of instructions on GitHub to look for indicators of compromise and take mitigation steps. However, the researchers behind the fracturizer repository warn that the full extent of the malware’s capabilities is still unknown and advise Minecraft players to exercise extreme caution until a complete way to remove any symptoms is found.

The Minecraft community is urged to hold off on downloading any new mods or plugins while cybersecurity researchers continue to work on finding a fix for this dangerous malware. With Minecraft’s popularity continuing to grow, it’s crucial that players take steps to protect themselves from the latest threats and vulnerabilities targeting the game.
