The Most Inspiring Women in Cyber Awards, organized by Eskenzi PR in media partnership with the IT Security Guru, seek to highlight the extraordinary women in the cybersecurity industry. Each year, a panel of esteemed judges selects the Top 20 women, and in 2024, one of these exceptional individuals is Jess Matthews, Compliance Governance Officer at Acacium Group.

In her role, Jess is responsible for ensuring Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) compliance to surpass the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) baseline in various aspects such as technical security, data protection, clinical safety, interoperability, usability, and accessibility. She also leads clinical safety efforts across multiple services to meet specific standards. Additionally, Jess manages the penetration testing program, assists in audits and compliance tasks, and oversees various security operations within the organization. Her role is diverse and provides her with a comprehensive understanding of the digital services offered by Acacium Group.

Jess’s journey into the cybersecurity industry began as a career switcher. Previously, she worked in Brussels in EU affairs and aerospace before Brexit prompted her to reassess her career path. After returning to the UK, Jess immersed herself in technology and eventually found her passion for cybersecurity. Through upskilling and networking opportunities, she transitioned into the Information Security team at Acacium Group, where she continues to thrive and grow.

One of the biggest challenges Jess faced was not related to her gender but rather to her transition from a different industry. Overcoming self-doubt and gaining confidence in her transferable skills were significant hurdles. However, through perseverance and support from the cybersecurity community, Jess was able to build her confidence and excel in her role. She emphasizes the importance of trusting in one’s abilities and seeking support from like-minded individuals.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Jess is actively involved in supporting other women in the tech and cybersecurity industry. She serves on the leadership team of Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) UK & Ireland Affiliate and co-founded Defend Together CIC, an organization focused on building cybersecurity communities in the South West and beyond. Through initiatives like Firewalls & French Toast, Cyber Cinema, and CSIDES, Jess aims to create inclusive spaces for women in cybersecurity and increase diversity within the industry.

Throughout her journey, Jess has been inspired by influential individuals such as her mother and Hazel McPherson, who have played pivotal roles in her personal and professional growth. Their support and mentorship have been invaluable to Jess, motivating her to excel in her career and make a positive impact in the cybersecurity community.

Jess Matthews’s story is a testament to perseverance, self-belief, and the power of community support in overcoming challenges and achieving success in the cybersecurity industry. Her dedication to supporting other women and promoting diversity exemplifies the spirit of the Most Inspiring Women in Cyber Awards and highlights the importance of empowering women in the field of technology and cybersecurity.
