In 2024, the police in the Central Zone of Tamil Nadu cracked down on online money fraud and cyber crimes by registering a total of 219 cases and arresting 64 individuals involved in these illegal activities. The districts within the zone saw varying levels of cyber crime, with Thanjavur district leading the pack with 58 cases, followed closely by Tiruchi district with 51 cases. Pudukottai and Karur districts also recorded significant numbers of online fraud cases, with 25 and 22 cases respectively.
To combat these crimes, the police took decisive action by freezing the bank accounts of fraudsters and confiscating a total of ₹5.02 crore from their accounts. The seized funds were then returned to the victims in accordance with court orders, providing some semblance of justice in the face of cyber crime.
In addition to cracking down on online fraud, the police also targeted individuals who used social media platforms to incite violence or disrupt social harmony. A total of 40 cases were filed against such offenders, leading to the arrest of thirteen individuals who were subsequently jailed for their activities.
To raise awareness about cyber crimes and online frauds, the police conducted a staggering 3,211 awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public on the dangers of online scams. Citizens were encouraged to report any instances of cyber crime by calling the toll-free number 1930, allowing law enforcement to swiftly respond to such incidents.
The Inspector General of Police for the Central Zone issued a directive to the Superintendents of Police in the nine districts under his jurisdiction, urging them to take strict action against cyber criminals and individuals spreading harmful messages on social media. This proactive approach aims to curb the rising trend of cyber crimes and maintain social harmony within the region.
Overall, the concerted efforts of the police in the Central Zone have led to a significant reduction in online money fraud and cyber crimes, sending a strong message to potential offenders that such illegal activities will not be tolerated. With continued vigilance and cooperation from the public, the authorities hope to create a safer and more secure cyber space for all residents of Tamil Nadu.
