Cyber-security firm Cybermerc has announced its expansion to the Sunshine Coast, marking its first venture outside of Canberra. The move comes at a time when cybercrime is on the rise in Australia, with millions of dollars being lost each year to online threats. The company’s decision to establish a presence in the region adds to the Sunshine Coast’s reputation as an innovative hub for combating cyber threats.

The Sunshine Coast has been actively working to position itself as a leader in cybersecurity, with initiatives like the Mooloolaba TAFE Cyber Security Training Operations Centre attracting various industry players to the area. Additionally, the introduction of The Critical Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (CI-ISAC) has further solidified the region’s role in promoting information sharing and collaboration to counter cyber-attacks.

With the recent selection of the Sunshine Coast to host the second AGM for CI-ISAC, the region has demonstrated its commitment to fostering a strong cybersecurity ecosystem. Now, with Cybermerc setting up an office in the area, the company aims to leverage the local talent and infrastructure to provide cutting-edge cyber security solutions to businesses, government, and enterprises.

Cybermerc’s presence on the Sunshine Coast is expected to bring economic benefits to the region, with plans to create 10 new jobs in addition to its existing five employees. The company has chosen the UniSC’s Innovation Centre as its base, highlighting the appeal of the region’s supportive business environment and growing technological infrastructure.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli welcomed Cybermerc to the area, emphasizing the importance of developing capabilities to combat cyber threats. Mayor Natoli expressed pride in the region’s focus on innovation and the opportunities it offers for career growth, particularly for the youth.

CEO of Cybermerc, Matthew Nevin, commended the Sunshine Coast for its achievements in the cybersecurity sector, attributing them to the robust broadband infrastructure and collaborative business community. Nevin highlighted the region’s connectivity and expertise as key factors in the company’s decision to establish a local presence.

The 2023 ASD Cyber Threat Report underscores the increasing prevalence of cybercrime in Australia, with a significant rise in reported incidents compared to previous years. Businesses across the country are facing escalating financial losses due to cyber threats, prompting initiatives like Cybermerc’s “Project DFNDR” to enhance cybersecurity measures for defense and critical infrastructure enterprises.

Collaboration with local organizations like the Manufacturing Excellence Forum on Project DFNDR aims to elevate the region’s cybersecurity capabilities and contribute to the nation’s economic and security landscape. The collective effort reflects a commitment to advancing cybersecurity solutions and safeguarding critical infrastructure against evolving threats.

Investment opportunities in the Sunshine Coast’s digital infrastructure can be explored through Invest Sunshine Coast, highlighting the region’s potential for growth and innovation in the cybersecurity sector.

Overall, Cybermerc’s expansion to the Sunshine Coast symbolizes a significant step towards enhancing cybersecurity resilience in Australia and fostering a collaborative environment for combating cyber threats. The region’s strategic positioning as a cybersecurity hub bodes well for future advancements in the sector, showcasing its commitment to staying ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of digital security.
