New KnowBe4 Report Reveals Education Sector’s Lack of Preparedness for Increasing Cyberattacks

In a recent report by KnowBe4, it was unveiled that the education sector is experiencing a surge in cyberattacks, making it the most targeted industry for such malicious activities in 2024. This revelation was corroborated by various sources, including a report from Check Point Research, which highlighted the alarming trend of cyber threats faced by educational institutions worldwide.

The report delved into key findings that shed light on the vulnerabilities present in both primary and higher education institutions. One prominent issue identified was the heavy reliance on third-party vendors for essential services like software-as-a-service, cloud storage, and IT services. While outsourcing these functions can streamline operations, it also poses a significant risk as any vulnerabilities or breaches within the third-party systems could potentially impact all institutions utilizing these services, often going unnoticed until it’s too late.

According to the 2024 Data Breach Investigation Report by Verizon, there were a staggering 30,458 security incidents, with 17% of them targeting the education system. Furthermore, Trustwave researchers monitored 352 ransomware claims against educational institutions in 2023, with phishing emerging as the primary method for initial infiltration into these organizations.

Despite these alarming statistics, the report also highlighted the positive impact of security awareness training in mitigating human risk within educational institutions. By providing employees with the necessary tools and education to identify and respond to cyber threats effectively, the susceptibility to phishing attacks decreased significantly in institutions that implemented sustained training programs and simulated phishing evaluations.

Stu Sjouwerman, CEO of KnowBe4, emphasized the urgent need for educational institutions to prioritize cybersecurity measures in light of the growing digital landscape in classrooms. He stressed the importance of equipping all individuals with the knowledge and awareness to safeguard sensitive data from sophisticated threat actors, especially given the resource constraints faced by many educational organizations.
