A dramatic escape story has emerged from Hyderabad, where a 28-year-old man, B Ravi from Nizamabad, managed to flee from Laos after being trafficked under the pretext of a job opportunity. Ravi, a postgraduate in chemistry, fell victim to a job agent’s deception and was coerced into engaging in cybercrime activities in Laos, a Southeast Asian nation.

Ravi’s ordeal began when he was lured first to Thailand and then to Laos in November 2024, only to realize the grim reality awaiting him. Upon his arrival, his passport was confiscated by the company representatives, and he was thrust into a training program that exposed him to the world of cybercrimes. Reflecting on the dangerous situation he found himself in, Ravi expressed gratitude that his escape plan succeeded, as failure would have likely cost him his life.

As the training progressed, Ravi and his fellow workers were made aware of their intended roles in scamming people and extracting money through cybercrimes. Determined to return to India, Ravi faced numerous obstacles, including the confiscation of his passport and being confined to a company dormitory with other workers. Undeterred by these challenges, he reached out covertly to the Chinese police, who advised him to seek help from the Indian embassy in Laos. Following an email outlining his predicament, the embassy intervened and issued a temporary travel document, facilitating Ravi’s journey back from Bokeo to Vientiane airport, ultimately leading him back to India on March 1.

Driven by a desire to prevent others from falling prey to similar traps, Ravi shared his harrowing experience with cybercrime authorities in Hyderabad and Nizamabad. His efforts bore fruit when the agent responsible for trafficking him, Mittapalli Narsa Reddy, aged 50, along with two accomplices, Alakunta Sampath, 31, and Dundagula Chiranjeevi, 21, were apprehended on March 4. The trio faced charges related to their involvement in sending young individuals abroad under false pretenses and were remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Acknowledging Ravi’s bravery and advocacy, Nizamabad cybercrime ACP Y Venkateshwar Rao lauded his actions for shedding light on the risks associated with job fraud and human trafficking. He urged the public to exercise caution when presented with seemingly attractive overseas job offers, underscoring the importance of vigilance in such scenarios.

In a world where vulnerability to exploitation remains a prevalent threat, Ravi’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers lurking behind false promises and deceptive schemes. Through his resilience and determination, he not only secured his own freedom but also sought to safeguard others from falling into similar traps. The arrests of the traffickers involved attest to the impact of his courageous stance, signaling a victory against exploitation and injustice.
