NordVPN introduces Sonar to combat phishing attacks

NordVPN, a leading cybersecurity company, has introduced its new experimental project, Sonar, as part of the NordLabs platform. This AI-enabled browser extension aims to assist internet users in identifying phishing emails and protecting themselves from cybercrimes.

The increased automation of phishing attacks through AI tools has raised concerns about the future escalation of such attacks, posing a significant cybersecurity threat. In response, NordVPN has developed Sonar, based on the large language model technology used in ChatGPT. The goal is to empower internet users to better identify phishing emails in an ever-changing environment of cybercrimes, according to Vykintas Maknickas, the head of product strategy at Nord Security.

Sonar, created by NordVPN’s team of engineers and developers, serves as a warning system for users in determining the likelihood of an email being a phishing scam. It provides information on which aspects of the email influenced the evaluation results and offers guidance on identifying potential signs of a phishing attempt. Initially, Sonar is available for Gmail users on the Google Chrome platform, with plans for expansion to other platforms in the future.

Members who have signed up on the NordLabs platform can expect approval to install and test the Sonar browser extension. While unregistered users can join the waiting list to access Sonar and other upcoming experimental projects.

Maknickas invites everyone to test Sonar and provide feedback, emphasizing that this collaborative effort will benefit not only the technology community but also every internet user. It will aid in understanding the most effective methods to counter cutting-edge technologies for a better and safer online experience.

NordVPN recently introduced NordLabs, a platform dedicated to exploring emerging technologies, including AI. The platform offers exclusive access to innovative projects developed by NordVPN before they are widely available.

In September, NordVPN plans to launch another project on the NordLabs platform. Named Pixray, this AI-enabled tool will assist in distinguishing AI-generated images from those created using traditional means. By leveraging AI technology, NordVPN aims to provide internet users with an additional layer of protection in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

NordVPN is a globally recognized VPN service provider trusted by millions of internet users worldwide.
