Officials in Zimbabwe receive cybersecurity training over four-day session

The Zimbabwean government has demonstrated its strong commitment to enhancing national cybersecurity capabilities by implementing a training program for public officials. Over 100 government officials recently completed the program, which focused on various aspects of cybersecurity and security governance to safeguard the country’s digital landscape.

The training covered topics such as global cybersecurity trends, international security standards, enterprise private protection governance, and enterprise data security governance practice. This initiative was prompted by recent high-profile hacking incidents within Zimbabwe, including the targeting of social media accounts and a major bank’s systems.

Dr. Tatenda Maveteras, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal, and Courier Services, highlighted the importance of addressing cyber threats in light of recent hacking incidents in the country. He emphasized the need for vigilance and preparedness to counter potential cyberattacks that could compromise sensitive information.

The government’s cybersecurity efforts have garnered praise from partners like Huawei Zimbabwe, which has been collaborating with Zimbabwe for over two decades. Huawei’s Managing Director, Yang Shengwan, commended Zimbabwe’s commitment to strengthening its digital defenses and pledged continued support through advanced technologies and expert training.

The Deputy Director General of POTRAZ, Alfred Marisa, underscored the critical role of cybersecurity in today’s data-driven world, where the volume of data has doubled in recent years. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships to protect digital infrastructure and address evolving cyber threats effectively.

Through initiatives like cybersecurity training for public officials and partnerships with industry leaders, Zimbabwe aims to position itself as a regional leader in combating cyber threats. By equipping its workforce with the necessary skills and fostering collaborations with the private sector, the government is laying the foundation for a more secure digital environment.

Overall, Zimbabwe’s focus on cybersecurity highlights its commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring the integrity of its digital infrastructure. With ongoing efforts and partnerships, the country is poised to strengthen its resilience against cyber threats and safeguard critical systems and data from malicious actors.
