iProov, a prominent provider of science-based biometric identity solutions, recently conducted a survey of 2,000 US consumers to gauge their perceptions and comfort levels regarding biometric facial verification. The findings from this survey shed light on Americans’ evolving attitudes towards securely verifying identities online and their openness towards passwordless verification methods like facial biometrics.

  1. Convenience Is King in Security: The survey revealed that consumers prioritize online security measures that seamlessly integrate into their digital lives without disruptions. A significant majority (70%) of Americans show interest in solutions like mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) for online identity verification, emphasizing the importance of convenience in user experience.

Biometrics Are Gaining Ground: Consumer trust in biometric security methods, particularly facial verification, is on the rise due to its combination of robust security and user-friendly experience. An increasing number of respondents (67%) prefer facial biometrics for identity verification at transportation hubs like airports and train stations. Moreover, a significant portion (61%) is inclined to use facial biometrics for account or payment verification at stores and e-commerce websites.

Doubts Regarding Old-School Security Verification Methods: The survey highlights widespread skepticism (79%) among Americans regarding the efficacy of traditional security methods like passwords, especially for accessing critical services such as banking and government platforms. This growing discontent underscores the need for governments and financial institutions to adopt advanced and user-friendly remote identification technologies like biometrics.

  4. Deepfake Dilemmas: The advancement of generative AI technology, which powers deepfakes, has raised concerns about the difficulty of distinguishing between genuine and fabricated content. Alarmingly, almost half of the respondents (47%) mistakenly believe they can easily differentiate between a deepfake and a real user image, highlighting the deceptive nature of these AI-generated manipulations.

Frustrations With Current Security Practices: The survey also revealed widespread frustrations among Americans with password-related issues, with 70% reporting the need to reset passwords frequently to access online services. This repetitive and time-consuming process underscores the inefficiencies of traditional security measures and the need for more seamless and secure alternatives.

While individuals are eager to embrace the conveniences of digital transformation, inadequate security practices pose significant risks, leading to increased fraud levels and eroding trust among consumers.
