The Indian government has raised a red flag to alert the public about a series of fake and deceitful emails that scammers have been circulating to deceive numerous individuals. A statement from the country’s finance ministry has highlighted the presence of a phishing scam currently targeting unsuspecting victims in India.
The fraudulent emails being sent by the scammers contain an attachment that makes serious accusations of child pornography, pedophilia, cyber pornography, sexually explicit content, grooming, and other related offenses against the recipients. These emails bear the names, signatures, and seals of various high-profile authorities, including Sandeep Khirwar, ADG, Cyber Crime and Economic Offence, Delhi Police Headquarters, Delhi, and Anupam Prakash, Joint Secretary (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act), Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB), along with stamps and logos of CEIB, Intelligence Bureau, and Cyber Cell, Delhi.
The ministry has cautioned the public not to engage with such emails and to report any instances of such fraudulent activity to the nearest police station or cyber police station. The scammers have utilized multiple email addresses to send these fake emails with attachments, prompting the authorities to take necessary action against such criminal activities.
In the attached email, references are made to various sections of the law, including Section 14 of the POCSO Act 2012, Section 292, Section 67A, and Section 67B of the IT Act 2000. The scammers demand that the recipients respond to the allegations within 24 hours to avoid potential sanctions.
According to a cybersecurity report by Zscaler, India ranked third globally in terms of the number of phishing attempts encountered in 2023, with a staggering 79.11 million recorded attempts. The United Nations Ad Hoc Committee addressing cybercrime has emphasized the need to address the issue of phishing, considering it as a predominant cybercrime on a global scale.
To combat the rising threat of phishing, India has proposed the establishment of a ’24×7 global communication channel’ between countries to facilitate swift information exchange between law enforcement agencies. The country aims to render phishing links inaccessible and identify malicious actors involved in cybercrimes through improved collaboration and coordination on an international level.
To protect oneself against phishing scams, individuals are advised to stay informed about common phishing tactics, verify email addresses and URLs before clicking on links, use multi-factor authentication for added security, keep software updated to patch vulnerabilities, trust their instincts when dealing with suspicious emails, and report any phishing attempts to relevant authorities for further investigation.
