In a recent report by IBM and Palo Alto Networks, it has been revealed that organizations are struggling with security complexity as they handle an average of 83 different security solutions from 29 vendors. The study also indicates that 7 out of 10 surveyed companies, which have heavily invested in cybersecurity platformization, have reported positive outcomes such as improved operational efficiencies and revenue generation.

The survey highlights the escalating threat of sophisticated cyber attacks, with 52% of executives acknowledging that the fragmentation of security solutions is impeding their ability to combat cyber threats effectively. However, a whopping 75% of organizations that have embraced security platformization recognize the importance of integrating security solutions across various technology platforms including hybrid cloud and AI.

Executives who have adopted platformization are reaping the benefits, with 96% of them considering security as a valuable asset compared to a mere 8% of those who have not implemented such strategies. The trend of accumulating more security solutions to counter evolving threats is said to be counterproductive, leading to inefficiencies that impact performance and profitability. In contrast, a platformized security approach promises reduced response times and costs without compromising security effectiveness.

The expanding digital connectivity has widened attack surfaces and introduced new vulnerabilities, making cyber attacks increasingly sophisticated and challenging to defend against. The use of AI by both attackers and defenders has resulted in a cybersecurity arms race, further complicating the landscape. The executives surveyed estimate that security complexity costs their organizations an average of 5% of their annual revenue, amounting to significant financial losses.

Mark Hughes, Global Managing Partner for Cybersecurity Services at IBM, emphasized the need for organizations to enhance their security posture to address new threats while also streamlining complexities and reducing costs. Executives are under pressure to cut security expenses, with 80% of them acknowledging the need to reduce security costs, and 41% attributing the rise in procurement costs to security fragmentation.

Organizations that have embraced platformization enjoy full visibility into potential vulnerabilities and threats, resulting in shorter mean time to identify and contain security incidents. Karim Temsamani, President of Next Generation Security at Palo Alto Networks, lauded the positive impacts of a platformized security approach, emphasizing the benefits it brings to organizations.

The research underscores the importance of platformization for effective security measures, with consolidated tools on a unified platform enhancing security posture and delivering nearly 4 times better ROI on cybersecurity investments. Additionally, integrating AI into the platform can enable organizations to analyze data effectively and derive actionable insights.

By adopting a platformization approach, businesses can align technologies, foster innovation, and prioritize security as a fundamental business requirement. As organizations gear up to scale, optimize, or innovate with AI in the coming years, integrating AI into platformized approaches can significantly enhance their security preparedness and future-proof their operations.
