Lucknow: The state of Uttar Pradesh has been facing a significant increase in cybercrime cases, with over 34,742 cases reported in 75 districts between 2022 and 2024. This alarming statistic was discussed during the inaugural of a two-day state-level workshop on cybercrime and cryptocurrency, organized at the UP Police headquarters in Lucknow. The workshop aimed to address the rising concerns over cybercrime and the use of cryptocurrency in illegal activities.
Director general of police (DGP) Prashant Kumar inaugurated the workshop, which was organized by the cybercrime section of the state police. During the event, Additional DG (ADG) Cybercrime Binod Kumar Singh highlighted the evolution of cybercrime policing in the state. He mentioned that in 2016, there were only two cybercrime police stations in Uttar Pradesh, located in Lucknow and Gautam Buddh Nagar. However, over the years, the state has significantly expanded its cybercrime policing infrastructure.
In 2020, the two cybercrime police stations were extended to cover 19 police range headquarters, and by 2023, this network expanded further to include 57 districts in the state. Additionally, cybercrime help desks were set up at all 1,531 police stations across the 75 districts in 2024. This expansion of cybercrime policing infrastructure reflects the authorities’ commitment to tackling the growing threat of cybercrimes effectively.
ADG Binod Kumar Singh also highlighted the efforts to enhance support for cybercrime victims in the state. He mentioned that the UP police’s integrated emergency response center, 112, was expanding its dedicated desk for assisting cybercrime victims. This initiative aims to provide immediate support to those affected by cybercrimes and guide them on how to report such incidents through the national helpline, 1930.
Furthermore, the ADG mentioned the upgradation of software at the cyber forensic lab set up at the 112 headquarters building. This enhanced technological infrastructure will enable law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations and gather digital evidence more effectively in cybercrime cases. The continuous improvement of cyber forensic capabilities is essential to stay ahead of cybercriminals who are constantly evolving their techniques to evade detection.
The rise in cybercrime cases in Uttar Pradesh underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and effective law enforcement strategies to combat this modern-day threat. By expanding their cybercrime policing infrastructure and enhancing support for victims, the authorities in the state are taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by cybercrimes. Collaboration between law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and the public is crucial to ensure a safe and secure digital environment for all residents of Uttar Pradesh.
