An awareness programme on cybercrimes for senior citizens was held at the CSI Church, Hennur Cross, with the Bengaluru City Police leading the initiative. The session, attended by around 50 seniors, aimed to educate them on the common modus operandi of cyber fraudsters and the importance of data privacy.

During the session, a police officer asked the participants for their personal and bank details, which they readily shared. This highlighted the vulnerability of senior citizens to cyber fraud due to their limited digital literacy. Many seniors have their life savings in their bank accounts, making them lucrative targets for fraudsters.

The officer explained how fraudsters operate and provided dos and don’ts for protecting oneself from cybercrimes. Despite being educated, many seniors are unaware that legitimate entities like banks, security agencies, or courier companies would never ask for their details or claim to ‘digitally arrest’ them. The officer emphasized the need for caution, even when individuals claim to represent government agencies like the police or customs.

The cybercrime awareness campaign, launched in collaboration with the Elders’ Helpline, aims to empower seniors to recognize and reject suspicious requests for personal information. The campaign also educates seniors on recognizing common scams such as lottery scams, fake tech support calls, and fraudulent investment schemes.

Dhananjaya J.N., a counsellor from Elders’ Helpline, emphasized the importance of remaining calm when faced with potential cyber fraud. Fraudsters often induce panic to extract bank details, but awareness of their tactics can help seniors confidently refuse such requests.

The campaign advocates for reporting cybercrimes promptly through dedicated helplines within the crucial golden hour. With cybercrimes on the rise, it is essential for seniors to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to prevent financial losses.

The Prime Minister recently clarified that the concept of a digital arrest does not exist, reinforcing the message that individuals should never disclose personal information, even to those claiming to represent government agencies. The campaign aims to dispel myths and educate seniors on protecting themselves from cyber threats.

As cybercrimes continue to increase, it is crucial for seniors to stay informed and vigilant. By raising awareness and providing practical tips, the cybercrime awareness campaign seeks to empower seniors to navigate the digital landscape safely and securely. Published on November 22, 2024, the initiative underscores the importance of staying alert and informed in the face of evolving cyber threats.
