The recent alarm raised by Progress Software regarding a potential data security breach has sent ripples through its user community. The company, which is well-known for its leading file-sharing service, Progress ShareFile, disclosed to its customers on July 10 that it had identified "a credible external security threat targeting Progress ShareFile Storage Zone Controllers." This revelation has raised concerns among users about the security of their sensitive data.

Progress ShareFile serves as the flagship enterprise file-sharing solution, and the Storage Zone Controller offers dedicated private data storage for its users. The recent security alerts were initially brought to light by a ShareFile user who posted an email from the company on Progress Software’s official ShareFile Community forum. This forum serves as a hub for users to discuss issues, including service disruptions that some users had begun reporting.

Following the alerts, Progress Software took precautionary measures by temporarily disabling access to affected ShareFile accounts. While Progress asserted that there was currently no evidence of unauthorized access to ShareFile accounts or their data, the company has urged users to take immediate action by manually shutting down the servers hosting their Storage Zone Controllers. This kind of quick response indicates that the company is treating the situation with the utmost seriousness, considering the gravity of potential data breaches in today’s digital landscape.

In a proactive move, Progress Software has initiated both internal and external security investigations to better understand the nature of the potential threat. However, the details surrounding the evidence that triggered these security concerns remain murky. Users and analysts alike have expressed concern regarding the lack of communication and specific information released by the company. As of July 10, users were informed they could expect further updates within the next 24 hours, but that timeline has drawn skepticism and frustration.

Online communities, particularly on platforms like Reddit, reported on July 13 that numerous ShareFile users had not received updates for three consecutive days. This situation seemed to be corroborated by the ShareFile status portal, which indicated that its most recent post was also dated July 10, leaving users in uncertainty.

Amidst this confusion, speculation has thrived in the online forums. Some participants have suggested that the security incident might be related to newly discovered vulnerabilities or even a zero-day flaw, which signifies an unpatched vulnerability that hackers could exploit. However, Progress Software has not confirmed any of these theories, leaving users in a state of anxiety regarding the integrity of their data.

A representative from Progress Software addressed the situation in a statement sent to Infosecurity on July 13. The spokesperson confirmed that by 5 p.m. ET on July 12, the company had informed all ShareFile customers with Storage Zone Controllers that access to the Progress ShareFile cloud service had been restored. However, they reiterated that Storage Zone Controllers would still need to be kept offline while investigations continued. This indicates an understanding that a cautious approach is necessary to ensure data integrity and security.

"We have no evidence of unauthorized access to any ShareFile customer account or data, and we have not identified any active threats," the spokesperson assured, although this statement offers little comfort amid the rising worries surrounding data privacy.

This latest security incident is not the first of its kind for Progress Software. Earlier this year, the company was involved in a breach concerning its MOVEit Transfer product, which was recently exploited in widespread ransomware attacks. Historical vulnerabilities, such as a critical one in MOVEit Automation reported in April 2026, have contributed to an ongoing narrative of security lapses at the company.

As this situation evolves, the stakes are high for both Progress Software and its user base.
