The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team (CEFT) and its partners have successfully disrupted global cryptocurrency scams, preventing over $70 million from being stolen by cybercriminals. Through Project Atlas, they have also frozen $24 million in fraudulent losses. This initiative, which involved collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide, has identified over 2,000 cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to fraud victims in 14 countries, including Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Project Atlas was a victim-centered effort aimed at dismantling organized cryptocurrency fraud schemes and raising awareness about cryptocurrency investment scams. The OPP expressed gratitude to their partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (NC3), United States Secret Service (USSS), Ottawa Police Service (OPS), Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), and private-sector collaborators such as Chainalysis, Ndax, Shakepay, and Coinbase.
Detective Superintendent Mike Bickerton, Director of Financial Crime Services at the Anti-Rackets Branch, Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team (CEFT) & Serious Fraud Office with the Ontario Provincial Police, emphasized the devastating impact of cryptocurrency investment frauds on victims globally. He noted the increasing sophistication of these crimes, which utilize manipulative social media ads, professional-looking websites, social engineering, and complex technology to deceive targets. Bickerton praised Project Atlas as a proactive and victim-centered approach to combatting cybercrime, urging the public to educate themselves about cryptocurrency investment frauds and share this knowledge to protect their loved ones.
Members of the public were encouraged to visit the OPP’s website to learn more about cryptocurrency investment frauds and how to prevent falling victim to such scams. Additionally, individuals were reminded to report any fraudulent activity or if they have been a victim of fraud to their local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The success of Project Atlas highlights the importance of international collaboration in combating cybercrime and protecting individuals from financial fraud. By working together with law enforcement agencies and private-sector partners, the OPP and its allies have made significant strides in disrupting cryptocurrency scams and safeguarding vulnerable individuals from financial exploitation. As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like Project Atlas will play a crucial role in combating cybercrime and enhancing public awareness of the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.
