The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has made significant strides in disrupting global cryptocurrency scams through their recent efforts with Project Atlas. The OPP Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team (CEFT) and their partners have successfully prevented over $70 million in cryptocurrency from being stolen by cybercriminals and frozen more than $24 million in fraudulent losses. This operation has not only saved millions of dollars but has also identified over 2,000 cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to fraud victims across 14 countries worldwide.
Working in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from countries such as Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, the OPP has been able to identify and thwart organized cryptocurrency fraud schemes. Project Atlas was a victim-centered initiative aimed at disrupting these fraudulent activities and raising awareness about cryptocurrency investment scams. The OPP has expressed their gratitude to their partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (NC3), United States Secret Service (USSS), Ottawa Police Service (OPS), Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), and private-sector collaborators like Chainalysis, Ndax, Shakepay, and Coinbase for their critical support.
Detective Superintendent Mike Bickerton, Director of Financial Crime Services at the Anti-Rackets Branch of the Ontario Provincial Police, emphasized the devastating impact of cryptocurrency investment frauds on victims globally. He highlighted the use of manipulative social media ads, professional-looking websites, social engineering, and advanced technology by cybercriminals to deceive their targets.
