The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team (CEFT) has successfully disrupted global cryptocurrency scams through Project Atlas, resulting in the prevention of over $70 million in stolen cryptocurrency and the freezing of $24 million in fraudulent losses. This initiative, which involved collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide, has identified more than 2,000 cryptocurrency wallet addresses associated with victims of fraud in 14 countries, including Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Project Atlas was designed to combat organized cryptocurrency fraud schemes and raise awareness about cryptocurrency investment scams. The OPP expressed gratitude towards their partners, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (NC3), United States Secret Service (USSS), Ottawa Police Service (OPS), Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), and private-sector collaborators such as Chainalysis, Ndax, Shakepay, and Coinbase.
Detective Superintendent Mike Bickerton, Director of Financial Crime Services at the Anti-Rackets Branch, Cyber-Enabled Fraud Team (CEFT) & Serious Fraud Office of the Ontario Provincial Police, highlighted the increasing sophistication of cryptocurrency investment frauds and emphasized the importance of educating the public to prevent such crimes. He commended Project Atlas as a victim-centered approach to combating cybercrime and urged individuals to share their knowledge about cryptocurrency frauds with their loved ones to protect them from falling victim to scams.
