A recent report by ESET researchers shed light on the insidious tactics employed in a disinformation and psychological campaign known as Operation Texonto. This campaign, orchestrated by threat actors aligned with Russia, aimed to sow seeds of doubt and despair among Ukrainians and Ukrainian speakers living abroad by disseminating false information on subjects related to the ongoing war. The campaign unfolded in two distinct waves, the first in November 2023 and the second in late December 2023, each wave delivering a barrage of deceptive messages designed to manipulate perceptions and incite fear.

The disinformation conveyed through Operation Texonto revolved around familiar themes characteristic of Russian propaganda, such as claims of heating shortages and scarcities of essential medicines and food supplies. By exploiting these concerns and amplifying them through various channels, the perpetrators sought to undermine the morale and resilience of the targeted population, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and vulnerability.

In conjunction with the disinformation campaign, ESET also uncovered a spearphishing operation targeting a Ukrainian defense company and a European Union agency. This tactic, commonly used to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information or credentials, was likely orchestrated in tandem with the broader psychological campaign, indicating a coordinated effort to infiltrate and compromise critical systems.

The linkages between the PSYOPs and phishing activities underscore the sophisticated and multifaceted nature of modern information warfare, where disinformation serves as a precursor to more direct and covert forms of cyber aggression. By leveraging psychological manipulation and social engineering tactics, threat actors can exploit existing vulnerabilities and sow discord within target communities, amplifying the impact of their malicious activities.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the prevalence of such hybrid threats highlights the pressing need for enhanced vigilance and resilience in the face of sophisticated adversaries. By staying informed and adopting robust cybersecurity measures, individuals and organizations can defend against the insidious influence of disinformation campaigns and mitigate the risks posed by malicious actors seeking to exploit vulnerabilities for their gain.
