The Puducherry Police Department is taking proactive measures to combat the increasing threat of cybercrimes by bolstering its Cyber wing with enhanced technological capabilities and specialized training for its personnel.
In the year 2024, a total of 135 First Information Reports (FIRs) related to various online frauds and financial crimes were lodged, leading to the arrest of 37 individuals and the recovery of ₹13.5 crore from fraudsters. In the current year, eight cases have already been registered, resulting in 10 arrests by the Cyber wing, as per police data.
To effectively investigate and solve cyber-related cases, the Police Department is planning to upgrade the Cyber Police Station with state-of-the-art investigation tools, including data extraction software and forensic devices. Senior Superintendent of Police, Crime and Intelligence, Narra Chaitanya, emphasized the importance of equipping the police force with modern cyber investigation tools and enhancing their skills to effectively combat cybercrimes.
In addition to procuring advanced technology, the department is focusing on training its personnel to handle various portals such as SAHYOG, Gandiva, and Samanvay established by the Centre to combat cybercrimes. The department has reached out to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs for training programs and has partnered with Rashtriya Raksha University in Puducherry for capacity building initiatives for the force.
Recently, 25 newly recruited constables with engineering and science backgrounds were enlisted in the cyber police unit and underwent training using platforms like iGoT Karmayogi and CyTrain. Specialized training was also provided to the cyber police team in cryptocurrency investigations, social media analytics, and blockchain technology to enhance their capabilities in handling complex cybercrimes.
While the Police Department is arming its force with the necessary skill set and tools, they are urging the public to exercise caution when dealing with online financial transactions, particularly those promising high returns. Emphasizing the need for ‘cyber hygiene’ and ‘cyber awareness,’ the department is focusing on raising awareness among middle-aged individuals and senior citizens who are often targeted by cybercriminals due to their disposable income and vulnerability.
As cybercrimes continue to pose a threat to individuals and businesses, the efforts of the Puducherry Police Department to strengthen its Cyber wing and enhance its investigative capabilities are crucial in combating this evolving challenge. By staying proactive and continuously upgrading their skills and tools, the department aims to effectively tackle cybercrimes and protect the public from falling victim to online fraudsters.
