Stolen data has emerged as a particularly lucrative asset, and its accessibility contributes to its appeal among criminals and nation-states alike. Unlike cash or cryptocurrency, obtaining and leveraging stolen data is far simpler. White suggests this ease allows criminals to swiftly turn a profit; they can sell data on the dark web or leverage it for phishing attacks. Additionally, they can hold organizations hostage by threatening to release sensitive information unless a ransom is paid. He cites high-profile data breaches, including the hacking of the Democratic Party during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, highlighting that stolen data can be weaponized to devastating effect.
