This vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 7.8, indicating its severity, and it targets an authentication bypass issue in the portal and gateway components of PAN-OS. The inherent risk associated with this flaw is that it allows unauthenticated remote attackers to bypass authentication mechanisms, thereby establishing VPN sessions without the need for valid credentials.

When authentication override cookies are enabled alongside specific certificate configurations, attackers can gain unauthorized access with relative ease. Their approach also included deploying password-protected ransomware payloads, demonstrating an understanding of the need for operational security. Moreover, extensive log-clearing routines were employed to obscure their activities, minimizing the risks of detection by cybersecurity defenses.

The threat actors seemingly weaponized the CVE-2026-0257 vulnerability to establish SSL VPN sessions, effectively gaining authenticated access to victim networks. From this foothold, the attackers escalated their strategies to enable credential harvesting and lateral movement using compromised administrative accounts. Such variability in execution and targets is indicative of RaaS models. In these frameworks, multiple affiliates can leverage shared initial access infrastructure and ransomware tooling, while selecting their own preferred post-exploitation methodologies.
