Rising Cyber Threats: Ransomware Attacks on Universities

Universities have increasingly found themselves vulnerable to cybercriminals, particularly in light of a significant uptick in ransomware attacks targeting higher education institutions. A recent analysis shed light on the alarming trend, revealing that between January and June 2026, attacks against these educational bodies rose by 8% compared to the previous six-month period. These findings are detailed in Comparitech’s Education Ransomware Roundup published on July 23, 2026.

The report attributes much of this surge in threats to the notorious ransomware group known as The Gentlemen, whose aggressive targeting of educational institutions has caused a staggering 275% increase in their attacks during the first half of 2026 compared to the latter half of the previous year. Impressively, 80% of The Gentlemen’s assault during this time was directed at colleges and universities, emphasizing a concerning trend in the shifting landscape of cybercrime.

The data analyzed by Comparitech indicated that a total of 104 ransomware attacks were reported within the global education sector during the first half of 2026. Among these incidents, 36 were confirmed by the victims as actual ransomware attacks. This statistic illustrates the ongoing vulnerability faced by educational institutions, particularly in a digital landscape that is ever-evolving.

While the report highlights the increase in ransomware targeting universities, it is crucial to note that the total number of cyber incidents recorded against the educational sector as a whole has seen a decline. This decrease can primarily be attributed to a significant reduction—by a quarter—in attacks against primary and secondary schools. However, this reduction should not lead to complacency, as the ongoing ransomware threat particularly looms large over higher education.

Rebecca Moody, head of data research at Comparitech, emphasized the importance of recognizing the impact that a single group can exert on the overall threat landscape. “This H1 report yet again emphasizes how one gang can significantly skew the data,” she stated, referring to the fluctuating numbers across different education levels. “Initially, the decline in attacks appears to be positive; however, a closer investigation reveals that this is largely influenced by one gang’s targeted efforts.”

The report further underscored that the scope of ransomware attacks against educational institutions is not solely confined to the United States; it reflects a broader, more global issue. Analysis of the data reveals that U.S. educational institutions were the most heavily impacted, reporting 34 confirmed victims. In comparison, the United Kingdom and Brazil followed with 13 and 8 confirmed ransomware incidents, respectively. Notably, universities in 17 additional countries also reported at least one confirmed attack during this timeframe.

Among the perpetrators, The Gentlemen and another group known as Qilin spearheaded the assault on educational institutions, with each claiming 15 attacks. They were trailed by LockBit, which reported 9 attacks, while Interlock and Nova each accounted for 6 incidents. This highlights the prevalence of specific ransomware groups and their targeted focus on the education sector.

Additionally, the report brought attention to the rising financial stakes involved in these cybercrimes. The median ransom demand issued to victim organizations in the education sector during the first half of 2026 reached a staggering $420,620, marking a monumental 53% increase from the prior half year’s median of $275,000. The report detailed the highest known ransom demand of $1.9 million, issued after a cyberattack on Mount Royal University in Canada. Even a month post-attack, the university grappled with significant disruptions to its systems, and the attackers claimed to have exfiltrated over 10 terabytes of sensitive data.

Moody highlighted the severe consequences of such attacks. “The incident involving Mount Royal University starkly illustrates the extensive ramifications that cyberattacks can impose on educational institutions,” she noted. “The hackers not only encrypted data but also wiped entire drives, creating obstacles that hinder recovery efforts and potentially leading to the irreversible loss of valuable information.”

In conclusion, ransomware attacks against universities represent an urgent threat that necessitates immediate attention and action from educational institutions worldwide. The findings from this report underscore the importance of instituting robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data and maintain operational integrity in a landscape where cyber threats continue to evolve.
