New CEO Wael Mohamed Targets Efficiency, Product Modernization, and Higher Win Rates

Rapid7 Reduces Workforce by 12% as New CEO Restructures Cybersecurity Company

Rapid7, a prominent player in managed cybersecurity operations, has announced its decision to terminate 12% of its workforce, which translates to approximately 314 employees, shortly after the appointment of Wael Mohamed as the new CEO. This strategic move is aimed at realigning the company’s resources to better focus on its core platform. The firm, based in Boston, made it clear that this workforce reduction is part of a broader initiative to streamline its organizational structure and bolster its competitive edge.

As part of this restructuring process, Rapid7 anticipates spending up to $11 million on severance packages and employee benefits. In a statement directed at investors, CEO Wael Mohamed emphasized the necessity of this strategic shift, clarifying that it serves to enhance efficiency across the organization. “We are also creating capacity to prioritize investments in cutting-edge, AI-driven solutions that will elevate customer experiences and strengthen our position in the marketplace,” Mohamed stated.

On the stock market, Rapid7 has seen a significant uptick, with shares climbing $2.08 to reach $13.70, marking a 17.96% increase. This surge in stock value is the highest seen since January 12, 2026, amid rising investor confidence in the newly restructured leadership under Mohamed. Taking the helm just two months prior, he replaced Corey Thomas, who had led the company since October 2012 and transitioned back to the role of chairman, following his tenure as CEO.

Comparative Analysis: 2026 Layoffs Versus 2023 Layoffs

The recent layoffs signal a second wave of workforce reduction for Rapid7, which had previously cut its staff by 18%, or over 470 positions, in August 2023. This earlier round of layoffs focused on trimming management layers, resolving role overlaps, and optimizing the distribution of talent between onshore and offshore resources. Following these cuts, Rapid7’s workforce stood at 2,613 as of December 31, 2025, showcasing a 17.3% growth compared to 2,228 employees at the end of 2023.

In addressing the reasoning behind this move, Thomas noted that the revitalized leadership team comes with experience in executing successful turnarounds and driving growth. The clarity surrounding focus areas allows for a more deliberate approach toward organizational efficiency and alignment with business goals. Rapid7 anticipates achieving a non-GAAP operating margin of 20% by the fourth quarter of 2026, an increase from 13.7% registered in the second quarter. The layoffs, along with other efficiency measures, are expected to play a vital role in reaching this target.

Despite an optimistic outlook, the immediate benefits of the workforce reductions will be counterbalanced by severance payments and reinvestment efforts aimed at product and engineering enhancements. Mohamed has reiterated the company’s ambitious goal of approximately $130 million in free cash flow for 2026, even as they face challenges in maintaining competitive performance within the vulnerability management sector.

Strategic Positioning: The Rationale Behind Workforce Cuts

When determining which positions to eliminate, Rapid7 focused on protecting those resources integral to the customer journey before and after a sale, demonstrating a commitment to customer retention and acquisition. Rapid7’s Chief Financial Officer, Rafe Brown, highlighted the organization’s careful consideration during this reorganization process, stressing the preservation of frontline resources in customer success and new sales. “We aimed to be prudent and conscientious as we searched for savings opportunities,” he stated.

The groundwork for this transformation was laid even before Mohamed assumed the CEO position. Leadership appointments were strategically made to augment areas such as operational precision and the implementation of AI-driven methodologies. As Mohamed described it, the restructuring was conducted with meticulous attention, ensuring that resources crucial to supporting the customer journey remained intact, thereby prioritizing customer satisfaction and retention.

Despite the restructuring efforts and accompanying strategy, Rapid7 has encountered challenges in keeping pace with peers in the vulnerability management space. Sales figures for the first half of 2026 reflected a slight decline, showing a drop to $420.6 million from $424.4 million in the previous year. Nevertheless, the company continues to receive recognition in the market, with invitations to customer evaluations. However, there is a consensus for an urgent need to enhance performance in securing deals that have thus far eluded them.

“We’re getting shortlisted and invited, yet I believe there’s room for improvement in our win rate,” Mohamed commented. This realization sets the stage for an intensified focus on refining customer engagement strategies and establishing a stronger competitive foothold within the industry.
