ReasonLabs, a leading cybersecurity company, has recently released its Summer 2023 Consumer Cybersecurity Trends Report. The report, which analyzed global security incidents from May to July 2023, provides valuable insights into the cybersecurity threats that are most prevalent for consumers today.
In an increasingly digital world, consumers are spending more and more time online, leaving them vulnerable to cyber threats. Many consumers are unaware of the commonality and complexity of cybersecurity threats that exist on the internet. ReasonLabs’ Trends Report aims to shed light on these risks and educate consumers on how to protect themselves.
According to the report, malware, which refers to software designed to disrupt or damage devices, was the top online threat affecting consumers during the analyzed period. Malware accounted for 58% of all detections, consistent with previous years. Phishing, an attack that tricks consumers into revealing sensitive information, ranked second at 24.7%. Adware, a form of malware that delivers unwanted advertisements and hijacks computer settings, accounted for 8.1% of all detections. Pirated software, which often contains embedded malware, and cryptojacking, a cyber attack where a hacker uses someone else’s device to mine cryptocurrencies without their knowledge, rounded out the top threats at 3.8% and 3.6%, respectively.
Interestingly, the report also revealed that in the United States specifically, both malware and phishing were equally popular attack vectors for cybercriminals.
