Russian Satellite Internet Attacked by Hackers Allegedly Affiliated with Wagner Group

In a significant blow to Russian satellite Internet provider Dozor-Teleport and its customers, including Russian military and energy interests, the company was knocked offline on June 29. The cyberattack against the satellite communications provider, initially claimed by the Wagner Group, a mercenary army that has seemingly turned against the Russian government, has raised questions among experts.

According to Russian reports, it may take up to two weeks for Dozor-Teleport to fully recover from the breach. The company’s general director, Alexander Anosov, confirmed the incident to Russian media and stated that preliminary investigations suggest the breach occurred through a third-party cloud provider.

The threat actors responsible for the compromise reportedly delivered malware to several satellite terminals, effectively taking them offline. To substantiate their claims, the threat actors posted internal data stolen from the Dozor-Teleport network on Telegram. In a message on the platform, the cyber attackers boasted about their ability to reach Moscow without encountering any resistance, suggesting a link to the Wagner Group.

The Wagner Group has not made any official mention of the cyberattack on its Telegram channel, leading to doubts about its involvement. Oleg Shakirov, a cybersecurity and international relations expert, has been monitoring the breach and expressed skepticism about Wagner’s alleged role. In a tweet on June 29, Shakirov stated that Wagner’s involvement is highly unlikely. Instead, he suspects the Ukrainian military may be responsible and suggested that certain Russian websites were defaced in an act of Ukrainian false flag trolling.

The incident raises concerns about the vulnerability of satellite communication systems and their potential impact on critical sectors.
