The latest patch released by SolarWinds addresses a significant issue, tracked as CVE-2024-28987, which involves hardcoded credentials that could potentially be exploited by a remote, unauthenticated attacker to gain unauthorized access to WHD and tamper with data.
The vulnerability was first discovered and reported by Zach Hanley, a vulnerability researcher at Horizon3.ai. Hanley emphasized the importance of continuous security measures, stating that even though the application had undergone security checks in the past, regular reviews are essential to prevent potential exploits.
This recent incident is not an isolated one for SolarWinds. Earlier in August, the company had to release an urgent hotfix for another critical vulnerability, CVE-2024-28986, which was related to a Java deserialization flaw. Despite thorough testing by SolarWinds to assess the severity of the issue, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirmed that threat actors were actively exploiting the vulnerability.
