Apple’s newest operating system update, macOS 15, also known as Sequoia, has caused a ripple effect in the functionality of several key security tools, prompting frustration among users and developers alike.
The release of macOS Sequoia has triggered widespread exasperation among developers of macOS security tools. Patrick Wardle, the founder of the Mac and iOS security startup DoubleYou, expressed his concerns over the recurring challenges that developers face with each new Apple update. Wardle emphasized the need for Apple to prioritize rigorous testing of their software before releasing it to avoid such problems.
The issues seem to have originated from changes in the operating system’s network stack, which have impacted numerous security products. A CrowdStrike sales engineer revealed in a Mac admin Slack room that the company had to postpone support for Sequoia due to these alterations, stating that there were significant changes in the network stack that needed to be addressed.
According to reports from TechCrunch, several companies have swiftly responded to the problems arising from the macOS Sequoia update. CrowdStrike issued a “Tech Alert” to its customers and is currently awaiting Apple’s update before providing official support. Despite the challenges, SentinelOne claims to have offered full support for macOS Sequoia immediately following its release. However, a SentinelOne Support account cautioned customers against upgrading their endpoints until they had a supported agent.
After upgrading to macOS Sequoia, ESET also notified its customers of network connection issues. While initial reports hinted at compatibility problems, an ESET spokesperson later confirmed that their products are compatible with the new OS. These issues with macOS Sequoia have not only affected enterprise security tools but have also been reported by individual users.
Security researcher Will Dormann highlighted issues with DNS and firewall operations on Mastodon, while another researcher, Wacław Jacek, pointed out that the OS firewall could block web browsing access after upgrading. These disruptions have extended beyond security tools to impact everyday applications like the Firefox browser.
The frustrations and challenges caused by the macOS Sequoia update underscore the importance of thorough testing and coordination between developers and operating system providers to ensure a smooth transition for users and avoid any unexpected issues in the future.
