Silobreaker, a security and threat intelligence company, has partnered with Risk Assistance Network + Exchange (RANE) to provide new geopolitical threat intelligence capabilities. This collaboration will allow Silobreaker to integrate RANE’s enterprise geopolitical intelligence into their platform, providing real-time information to cyber threat intelligence teams about global events that may increase the risk of cyberattacks.
The integration was unveiled at Infosecurity Europe 2023 in London and aims to offer context into highly complex and interconnected events. By doing so, teams will be able to proactively reduce their organizations’ exposure to risks that could impact business productivity, resiliency, and continuity. Silobreaker stated that this integration will enable users to access RANE reports, country risk scores, and Silobreaker’s data source-agnostic platform seamlessly. It will also allow teams to pivot between different intelligence sources, including data from millions of open and dark web sources, to meet complex intelligence requirements. The platform will feature automated data collection and customizable dashboards.
The release of these new capabilities comes at a time when the lines between geopolitical events and cyber activity have become increasingly blurred. Factors such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, political conflicts, and nation-state cyber campaigns have contributed to this blurring of lines. In recent years, geopolitical events have had a significant impact on cyber threats, making it crucial for organizations to have access to multi-disciplinary intelligence.
Kristofer Mansson, CEO of Silobreaker, highlighted the importance of understanding the connection between geopolitical events and cyber threats. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has been a significant source of concern for organizations. Last September, Lindy Cameron, the head of the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), warned UK organizations and Ukraine’s allies to prepare for Russian cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. She described the conflict in cyberspace as “probably the most sustained and intensive cyber campaign on record,” with the Russian State launching major cyberattacks in support of their invasion of Ukraine.
A Forrester report also highlighted the expanding cyber impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The report revealed that malware attacks associated with the conflict have spread beyond the conflict zone and infiltrated European entities. Russian hackers have utilized advanced persistent threats (APTs) and sensitive data infiltration to gain an advantage. The report indicated that a quarter of investigated intrusion attacks were successful, and strategic information was exfiltrated by Russian adversaries. However, it suggested that the true extent of the Russian threat might be underestimated.
