Seattle-based cybersecurity firm, SpecterOps, has announced that it has secured an $8.5 million investment from Ballistic Ventures, extending its Series A funding round to a total of $33.5 million. The investment will be used to accelerate the adoption of SpecterOps’ flagship product, BloodHound Enterprise (BHE), as well as expand research and development efforts across the company, including its BloodHound free and open source software (FOSS).

BloodHound Enterprise is the industry’s first platform designed to remove identity attack paths in Microsoft’s Active Directory (AD) and Azure AD. By comprehensively addressing this vulnerability, SpecterOps is providing a practical solution to the growing threat of identity-based attacks. The funding from Ballistic Ventures will enable the company to further enhance and promote BHE, encouraging its adoption in the cybersecurity industry.

As part of the investment deal, Kevin Mandia, the CEO and founder of Mandiant and co-founder of Ballistic Ventures, will join SpecterOps’ Board of Directors as an Observer. Mandia brings a wealth of cybersecurity experience and knowledge to the company, which will undoubtedly contribute to its continued success.

Speaking about the investment, Mandia stated, “SpecterOps is solving for a crucial security problem in a way that both works for defenders and can make dramatic improvements to users’ overall security posture. Ballistic looks forward to their continued success and impact.”

SpecterOps’ CEO, David McGuire, expressed the company’s excitement at partnering with Ballistic Ventures, highlighting the cybersecurity firm’s unmatched experience and knowledge in the industry. He believes that Ballistic’s support, resources, and mentorship will take SpecterOps to another level.

This recent investment follows SpecterOps’ announcement in April of a $25 million funding round led by Decibel. The round saw participation from several individual investors, including Jon Oberheide and Dug Song, the co-founders of Duo Security. These investments reflect a growing recognition of the need for practical solutions that address identity-based threats, particularly as the industry moves towards a Zero Trust model and identity becomes an increasingly critical aspect of digital infrastructure.

The success of SpecterOps’ BloodHound FOSS, a popular tool for penetration testers and red teamers to identify attack paths in on-premises Active Directory and Azure AD cloud environments, inspired the development of BloodHound Enterprise. Since its launch in 2021, BloodHound Enterprise has experienced rapid customer adoption, with significant revenue growth and new customer acquisition increasing by over 600%. Major companies, such as Capital Group, the University of Texas at Austin, and Woodside Energy, now use BloodHound Enterprise to enhance their cybersecurity defenses.

SpecterOps is a cybersecurity solutions and services provider that leverages its deep knowledge of adversary tradecraft to help clients detect and defend against sophisticated attackers. The company is renowned for releasing a range of widely used free and open-source security toolsets, including BloodHound, which has received endorsements from organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Ballistic Ventures, on the other hand, is a venture capital firm solely dedicated to early-stage cybersecurity and cyber-related companies. With its partners boasting extensive experience in defending against cyber threats, the firm provides impactful support and valuable networks and relationships to the companies it invests in. The Ballistic portfolio includes numerous cybersecurity firms, including SpecterOps.

SpecterOps’ partnership with Ballistic Ventures marks an exciting chapter for the company. With the additional funding and the expertise offered by Ballistic, SpecterOps is well-positioned to further advance its cybersecurity solutions and make a significant impact in the industry.
