In a major crackdown on an online financial scam operation, Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigations Department arrested 137 Indian nationals across various locations. The arrests took place in the Colombo suburbs of Madiwela and Battaramulla, as well as the coastal town of Negombo. Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa revealed that simultaneous raids were conducted in these areas, resulting in the seizure of 158 mobile phones, 16 laptops, and 60 desktop computers.

The operation in Negombo saw 55 suspects being detained, along with 55 mobile phones and 29 laptops. In Kochchikade, authorities apprehended 53 individuals and confiscated 31 laptops and 58 mobile phones. Additionally, in Madiwela, 13 suspects were arrested, and eight laptops and 38 mobile phones were recovered. In Thalangama, 16 suspects were taken into custody with eight laptops and 38 mobile phones. All the arrested individuals were males, according to SSP Thalduwa.

The crackdown was initiated following a complaint from a victim who was enticed into a WhatsApp group that promised cash for social media interactions. Further investigation revealed a complex scheme where victims were manipulated into making deposits after initial payments. In Peradeniya, a father-son duo confessed to aiding the fraudsters.

The breakthrough in the case came during a raid on a luxury house in Negombo, which led to the initial arrest of 13 suspects and the seizure of 57 phones and computers. Subsequent operations in Negombo uncovered 19 additional arrests, revealing international connections in Dubai and Afghanistan. The victims of this scam included both locals and foreigners, underscoring the widespread impact of the fraudulent activities.

Authorities suspect that the arrested individuals were involved in financial fraud, illegal betting, and various forms of gambling. The elaborate operation highlights the necessity of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat online scams and protect individuals from falling prey to such deceitful practices.

The crackdown on the online financial scam operation underscores the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies in Sri Lanka and other countries to tackle cross-border criminal activities. The arrests of the 137 Indian nationals involved in the scam serve as a warning to perpetrators engaging in fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals.

As the investigation progresses, further details are expected to emerge regarding the extent of the online financial scam and the methods employed by the perpetrators. The swift action taken by the Criminal Investigations Department in apprehending the suspects reflects the commitment of authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety and security of the public.
