In today’s increasingly digital world, the role of the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) is facing new challenges and complexities. With the rise of data breaches, changing regulations, and the intricate nature of digital ecosystems, the need for a privacy-first approach to data management is more crucial than ever for businesses. The expanding scope of the CPO’s responsibilities was highlighted by Keith Enright, Google’s outgoing Chief Privacy Officer, on a recent episode of “The Privacy Insider” podcast. Enright emphasized that the data privacy role has become so multifaceted that it now requires a jack of all trades. In many organizations, CPOs are not only managing privacy issues but also handling security, data ethics, and AI governance. Data privacy has become intertwined with various aspects of the business, raising the question of whether a single individual can effectively handle all these responsibilities.

Many companies are now striving for a more integrated approach to data governance and protection. They are seeking a member of the C-suite who can oversee a broader range of responsibilities, including data protection, compliance, and ethical use. The interconnected nature of technologies, data, and risks suggests that a more collaborative team effort might be necessary to effectively address these complex challenges.

One of the key areas where collaboration is essential is in guarding against data breaches. While the responsibility for preventing breaches typically falls on the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), a comprehensive data protection strategy also requires input from the CPO. Good data privacy practices are essential for strong cybersecurity, as they help identify, safeguard, and minimize the impact of sensitive data exposure during a breach. By working together, CPOs and CISOs can help contain the immediate damage of a breach and mitigate potential reputational and regulatory consequences.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) presents additional challenges for privacy and data protection. Companies often turn to the CPO for guidance on the ethical use of AI technologies, particularly around issues of consent, bias, and transparency. While AI governance is traditionally the domain of the CISO or Chief Data Officer (CDO), CPOs can still play a crucial role in ensuring that AI is used in a privacy-forward manner. Their experience with data protection regulations like GDPR can help guide businesses in managing the ethical complexities of AI implementation.

Overall, the evolving role of the CPO emphasizes the importance of collaboration and integration across different areas of the business. Whether there is a designated CPO or a decentralized approach to privacy management, the value of data privacy cannot be understated. Privacy programs not only strengthen cybersecurity and AI governance but also enhance trust and mitigate risk in the organization. Ultimately, the role of the CPO lies in demonstrating the value of a strong privacy program to bolster the overall resilience of the business.
