Identity management, specifically privileged identity management, is an essential component of a strong cybersecurity strategy. The recent ManageEngine Identity Security Survey 2024 has shed light on the current landscape of identity management, gathering insights from security decision-makers worldwide. The survey highlights the critical role of identity management in a world where cyber threats are becoming more prevalent. According to the survey, an alarming 77% of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) reported experiencing identity-related cyber attacks in 2023.

Cybersecurity expert Jane Frankland emphasizes the significance of identity management in the digital age, noting that while organizations understand its importance, many struggle with its implementation. With the increasing number of identity-related cyber attacks and looming AI-driven threats, the need for robust solutions is evident. However, gaps in visibility of overprivileged identities and differing perspectives between the C-Suite and IT teams expose vulnerabilities within organizations.

The concept of Zero Trust, where standing privileges or permanent user access permissions are minimized, remains an aspirational goal for many organizations. The survey revealed that only 27% of respondents claimed to have achieved Zero Trust by eliminating standing privileges. The education sector leads the way in adopting Zero Trust, with 27% of organizations removing all permanent permissions, while only 15% of healthcare organizations have reached this milestone. The survey also showed that 68% of respondents feel the need for more tools to effectively manage identities, indicating that current efforts may not be sufficient to combat identity-related threats.

A key finding from the survey is the growing interest in AI technologies for identity management. Organizations are eager to explore AI-driven solutions that promise increased productivity and faster investigations, even if they require extensive training. Over half of the respondents expressed willingness to adopt AI tools for identity management.

The rise of AI in cybersecurity poses both opportunities and challenges, as organizations anticipate AI-driven threats while embracing AI-powered solutions to counter them. The balance between leveraging advanced AI tools and addressing gaps in Zero Trust and privileged identity management will shape the future of cybersecurity in 2024 and beyond. As AI-generated threats increase, organizations must navigate the evolving landscape of identity management, where AI serves as both a defender and a potential threat.

A gap in perception was observed between the C-suite and technical staff regarding identity security budgets and organizational capabilities. While almost all Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) believe their company will allocate a budget for identity security tools in the next five years, a significant portion of IT Operations staff do not share this view. Additionally, there is a discrepancy in how the C-suite and IT Operations perceive the organization’s security stack, highlighting the importance of open dialogue and collaboration between leadership and technical teams.

The survey illustrates the complexities of modern identity management, with organizations recognizing the importance of identity security but facing challenges in its execution. As AI continues to evolve, organizations must invest in tools and strategies that can keep pace with emerging threats. By adopting advanced technologies and fostering communication between leadership and technical teams, organizations can create a comprehensive approach to identity management that addresses current challenges and prepares for future threats.
