Google’s efforts to combat Dragon Bridge activity, a China-affiliated influence operator promoting pro-People’s Republic of China (PRC) views online, have intensified with over 10,000 instances blocked in the first quarter of 2024. The tech giant previously disrupted over 65,000 instances of Dragon Bridge activity across YouTube and Blogger in 2023, indicating a consistent effort to thwart the group’s influence.

The Threat Analysis Group (TAG) at Google has identified Dragon Bridge as the most prolific influence operator it tracks, highlighting the significance of addressing this threat. While much of the group’s activity involves low-quality content without a political message, a subset of Dragon Bridge accounts distribute content related to current events such as elections in Taiwan and the Israel-Hamas conflict. These narratives often include criticism of the US government and target Chinese speakers as well as individuals who speak English and other languages.

One notable development in Dragon Bridge’s tactics is the increasing use of AI tools in their influence operations. Google noted a surge in Dragon Bridge activity surrounding Taiwan’s general election, with the group employing generative AI tools to create content, including videos and comments on YouTube, featuring synthetic audio and avatars. The content promoted a false “secret history” document critical of the outgoing Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, indicating a deliberate effort to sway public opinion.

This sophisticated campaign extended beyond Google platforms to include X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook, showcasing the group’s ability to operate across multiple online spaces. Dragon Bridge also utilized AI-generated videos featuring news hosts, some of which appeared realistic while others were clearly computer animated. Despite these advancements, Google noted that the use of AI tools has not significantly increased engagement from real viewers thus far.

In the lead-up to the US elections, Dragon Bridge has continued to produce content critical of the US government, society, and democracy. Recent videos and comments in English focused on student protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict, presenting a pro-Palestine narrative that criticized US and Western governments and media. This content aligns with Dragon Bridge’s past campaigns, which often feature low-quality videos and text overlay or content designed to mimic a TV news segment.

Looking ahead, Google anticipates that Dragon Bridge will develop pre-produced content related to the 2024 US general election, building on their previous efforts to highlight political divisions and threats to democracy. The group’s tactics may evolve to include more nuanced strategies, such as using inauthentic personas and engagement techniques to attract followers on other platforms.

Overall, Google’s continued vigilance in monitoring and disrupting Dragon Bridge activity underscores the ongoing challenge of combating influence operations that seek to manipulate online discourse and shape public opinion. As technology advances, so too must efforts to detect and counter these threats to ensure a more transparent and informed online environment.
