A recent study conducted by cybersecurity firm Fortinet has unveiled the alarming reality that the majority of organisations fell victim to cyber attacks last year. These findings shed light on the increasing threat posed by cyber incidents, which are not only causing financial losses but also placing businesses under considerable social pressures.

According to the research findings, almost 90 percent of organisations reported experiencing one or more security breaches in the previous year. Shockingly, nearly two-thirds of these organisations took longer than a month to fully recover from the aftermath of the cyber attack. This prolonged recovery time highlights the devastating impact that such incidents can have on the operational continuity of businesses.

Furthermore, the data revealed that more than half of the affected organisations suffered significant financial losses as a result of the cyber attacks. Specifically, 53 percent of the impacted organisations reported losses exceeding $1 million in revenue. This represents a 15 percent increase over the past two years, indicating a worrying trend of escalating financial damages caused by cyber incidents.

In addition to the financial implications, the study also highlighted the personal consequences faced by directors and executives in the aftermath of a cyber attack. More than half of the respondents acknowledged that cyber incidents had resulted in directors or executives facing fines, imprisonment, or even loss of employment or position within the organisation. This underscores the severity of the repercussions that individuals in leadership positions may face as a result of cybersecurity breaches.

Despite the growing awareness and focus on cybersecurity within organisations, the study identified a critical challenge hindering the effectiveness of cybersecurity measures – the skills shortage. A significant number of respondents cited the lack of necessary skills and training among IT staff as the primary cause of security breaches. This was closely followed by a lack of employee security awareness and inadequate cybersecurity products, pointing to systemic vulnerabilities that need to be addressed.

Moreover, the study revealed that the skills shortage not only posed direct risks to organisations but also created additional vulnerabilities. Network engineers and security experts were identified as the most difficult roles to recruit, highlighting the pressing need for qualified professionals in the field of cybersecurity.

In response to these challenges, nearly 90 percent of respondents expressed willingness to invest in cybersecurity certifications for their employees. Implementing mandatory training for IT staff was deemed the most effective measure to enhance cybersecurity within organisations, emphasizing the importance of continuous education and upskilling in the fight against cyber crime.

The study, which gathered data from over 1,800 IT and cybersecurity leaders worldwide, underscored the global nature of the cybersecurity threat. From China and Australia to the UK and the US, organisations are grappling with the pervasive impact of cyber incidents and the urgent need to bolster their cybersecurity defenses.

As organisations navigate this complex landscape of cybersecurity risks and challenges, the study serves as a timely reminder of the critical importance of investing in cybersecurity measures and equipping employees with the necessary skills to protect against cyber threats. Only through proactive and comprehensive cybersecurity strategies can organisations hope to mitigate the risks posed by cyber attacks and safeguard their operations in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.
