Telangana has witnessed a surge in cyber crime cases, with a whopping 10,000 First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in the first half of 2024. The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has been at the forefront of investigating these cases, uncovering crime links of 671 individuals to a staggering 77,000 cyber crime cases nationwide. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, in a move to bolster the bureau’s capabilities, recently flagged off a new fleet comprising 14 four-wheelers and 55 two-wheelers.

The alarming rise in cyber crime incidents has prompted the Chief Minister to allocate a substantial budget of ₹3.75 crore to the TGCSB in the first quarter of the year. This financial support demonstrates the government’s commitment to combating cyber threats and ensuring the safety of its citizens in the digital realm.

One of the most concerning aspects of the cyber crime surge is the significant financial losses incurred by residents of Telangana. Reports indicate that a staggering ₹263 crore has been lost to cyber criminals, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate such risks. To tackle the growing threat, authorities have taken decisive action by blocking 36,749 suspected SIM cards, along with 8,300 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEIs) and 2,300 URLs and applications associated with fraudulent activities.

In a positive development, efforts to provide restitution to cyber crime victims have yielded results, with a total of ₹32 crore refunded to 5,191 individuals since March 18. This initiative not only aims to alleviate the financial burden on affected individuals but also serves as a deterrent to cyber criminals by showcasing the authorities’ commitment to addressing such crimes.

The TGCSB’s relentless pursuit of cyber criminals has been further underscored by its successful crackdown on inter-state fraudulent links. The bureau’s efforts have led to the takedown of 27,600 SIM cards used by cyber criminals, thereby disrupting their illicit activities and safeguarding the interests of the public. Additionally, the blocking of 8,300 IMEIs and 2,300 URLs and applications has further curtailed the operational capabilities of cyber criminals, making it more challenging for them to carry out their nefarious activities.

The ongoing battle against cyber crime in Telangana has underscored the need for continuous vigilance and collaboration between law enforcement agencies, technology experts, and the public. As the digital landscape evolves, so too must the strategies and tools used to combat cyber threats. The allocation of resources, coupled with proactive enforcement measures, will be key in fortifying the state’s cyber security infrastructure and ensuring a safer digital environment for all residents.
