Maher Yamout, Kaspersky’s lead cybersecurity researcher, attributed the spike in cyberattacks to several factors, including the adoption of hybrid work models and rapid digitalization in the B2B sector. The lack of sufficient cybersecurity investments in some African businesses has also left them vulnerable to advanced threats. Additionally, the expansion of digital financial services, combined with low digital literacy rates in the B2C sector, has made individuals prime targets for cybercriminals.
In 2024, Kaspersky detected a total of 131.6 million web threats in Africa, with notable attack attempts in countries like Kenya, South Africa, and Morocco. Phishing and ransomware were identified as the most common threats, with over 66 million phishing link clicks recorded in the region. Corporate users were targeted in more than 14.8 million phishing attempts. Moreover, local on-device threats, such as malware spread through USB drives and encrypted files, saw a 4% increase, impacting countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, Senegal, and Morocco.
