The recent cyberattack on Synnovis, a London-based pathology services provider, has caused widespread concern and disruption. After the Qilin ransomware gang leaked sensitive patient data, including names, dates of birth, NHS numbers, and blood test descriptions, Synnovis confirmed the legitimacy of the published data. The company acknowledged that the data was stolen from its systems, specifically from an administrative working drive containing fragments of patient identifiable data.

Following an initial review, Synnovis determined that the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) were not affected by the breach. However, patient-identifiable data from the administrative working drive was compromised. The company reassured employees that payroll information remains secure, but additional reviews are underway to assess any employee-related data accessed by the hackers.

In response to the breach, Synnovis has prioritized understanding the compromised data and is working with technical experts to investigate further. The company aims to mitigate concerns among service users, employees, and partners by providing updates as the investigation progresses.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into the cyberattack, recognizing the sensitivity of the leaked data and the potential anxiety it may cause. The ICO advises individuals affected by the breach to seek guidance and support on their website and NHS England’s site.

NHS England is collaborating with Synnovis and the National Crime Agency to address the ransomware attack. While NHS England acknowledges the complexity of the investigation and the time required to identify all impacted individuals, efforts are being made to provide updates and support to those affected.

The cyberattack has had a significant impact on patient care, causing delays in blood tests and sample processing. Some patients may face wait times of up to six months for blood collection, prompting concerns about access to critical healthcare services. The disruption has led to decreased daily blood sampling counts in major London hospitals, impacting patient care and treatment.

As the investigation continues, NHS England and Synnovis are working to manage the impact on patients and ensure essential blood samples are processed promptly. Additional resources have been deployed to support urgent care needs and maintain continuity of patient care.

Private clinics have reported an increase in patients seeking faster testing and analysis due to the delays caused by the cyberattack. The cost of accessing these services may be significantly higher, further highlighting the challenges faced by patients in accessing timely healthcare.

The impact of the ransomware attack extends to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), which has appealed for urgent blood donations, particularly O blood types. The disruption in blood matching processes has increased the demand for O-positive and O-negative blood donations, emphasizing the importance of supporting healthcare services during times of crisis.

Overall, the Synnovis ransomware attack has highlighted the vulnerabilities in healthcare systems and the need for robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard patient data and maintain critical services. The ongoing investigation and response efforts aim to mitigate the impact of the breach and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
