Taiwan prohibits DeepSeek AI and Meta cautions about internal risks

Taiwan, in an effort to enhance cybersecurity measures, has recently announced a ban on the usage of DeepSeek, an AI-powered chatbot developed by a Chinese startup, within government entities and critical infrastructure organizations. This decision, made by Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs, aims to mitigate potential data leaks and security risks associated with the use of AI platforms, especially those developed in China.

The concern over data security and privacy breaches became more pronounced after DeepSeek fell victim to a cyber attack on January 20th, resulting in service disruptions and a subsequent data breach. The attack, identified as a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) incident, raised alarms over the platform’s vulnerability to such attacks and unauthorized data access. Reports also indicated a surge in fake web traffic originating from various foreign locations, further underscoring the security risks associated with the platform.

The global apprehension surrounding AI-driven data security has prompted several nations to scrutinize the handling of user-generated data by AI firms. One significant cause for concern regarding DeepSeek is its practice of transmitting data to foreign servers instead of storing it locally, which heightens the risk of misuse or unauthorized access. Consequently, several countries have advised their citizens against using DeepSeek’s services as a precautionary measure.

Taiwan’s decision to restrict the use of DeepSeek in government entities aligns with similar actions taken by Italy and the broader European Union, reflecting a broader trend of caution regarding AI platforms with questionable data security frameworks. These measures indicate a growing awareness of the importance of safeguarding sensitive information and mitigating cybersecurity risks associated with the use of AI technology.

In a separate development, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has issued a stern warning to its employees regarding insider threats and data leaks. The company’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Guy Rosen, emphasized the imperative of safeguarding proprietary information and preventing unauthorized disclosures. With Meta’s focus on AI innovation, protecting research and development efforts has become paramount to maintain a competitive edge in the field of AI science.
